HISTORY

1978
Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services established Child Protection Teams under the auspices of Children’s Medical Services. The objective was to provide medical assessments to assist in the identification of maltreatment and the assessment of risk.

1985
The National Children's Advocacy Center movement began and soon the concept of advocacy centers emerged in Florida. The centers provided child-friendly settings where investigations could occur and treatment plans could be designed. They also became sites for the development of preventive strategies.

1994
The first Children's Advocacy Center in Florida opens in Daytona Beach, serving Volusia and Flagler Counties.

2001
Children's Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida was formed.
